It came as a bit of a surprise this past Friday. Hal Steinbrenner has announced the New York Yankees long standing ban on facial hair has come to an end. Now players and coaches on the field will be allowed to have "well maintained beards." The team owner said: "in recent weeks I have spoken to a large number of current and former Yankees. Spanning several eras to elicit their perspectives on our long standing facial hair and grooming policy. I appreciate their earnest and varied feedback. Ultimately, the final decision rests with me, and after great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well groomed beards moving forward."
