The third and final arch of the new North Portal Bridge is now up. The project to replace the current 114 year old bridge is expected to be completed by late next year. The old Portal Bridge has been operating since 1910. The last few years have been a nightmare for commuters. Many problems with the deteriorating bridge have caused long delays and closures.
The old Portal Bridge is the busiest railroad bridge in the western hemisphere. Each day about 450 Amtrak and New Jersey Transit Trains cross over the Hackensack River on the bridge. That's up to 200.000 passengers each day. The new Portal Bridge is going up right next to the old one.
