What would happen if a large ship struck a major bridge in New Jersey or New York? The National Transportation Safety Board just told us that more than 70 bridges built before 1991 should get vulnerability inspections as soon as possible. Several of those bridges are in New York and New Jersey.
New Jersey's Newark Bay Bridge and Commodore Barry Bridge made the list. In New York, the Newburgh Beacon Bridge and George Washington Bridge made the list. The NTSB says these bridges are not in danger of imminent collapse but could possibly come down if a large cargo ship slams into them. The recommended vulnerability inspections would create a plan to reduce any risk of the bridges coming down.
